Content: h1 How do you treat bioenergy?

The emissions from burning biomass are counted as fossil fuel combustion and then exactly offset by a ‘bioenergy credit’. This has the effect of making bioenergy zero emissions, except if it is used in carbon capture and storage, in which case it becomes negative emissions.

If you hover your mouse over the bottom most blue bar on the right hand chart you will see that it is labelled as bioenergy credit -48 MtCO2e a year.

This assumption is, of course, crude, because it assumes that:

# There are no additional land use change emissions from the bio-energy
# That the conversion of bioenergy from raw material to useful fuel is powered by bioenergy (so that there are no extra emissions in conversion).
