Low cost pathway

Significant demand reduction, electrification of heating and large deployment of nuclear.

This pathway has significant demand reduction, electrification of heating, significant decarbonisation of transport, deployment of bioenergy and large deployment of nuclear.

This pathway was produced by manually iterating the Calculator to find a solution to achieving the UK's 2050 target that costs less than no effort to decarbonise.

This is a purely illustrative pathway. It has been designed to keep costs low, but it has not been tested for political or public acceptability. It is not a preferred pathway of the UK Government.

It has relatively low resource costs, however the significant demand reduction in this pathway may impose welfare costs (for example, on travellers and households) which would not be captured by these costings. For full details of the caveats associated with the costs work, see: important caveats.
